Nippers U-6 Age Division (Ages 4 and 5)

The Nippers program is for Kindergarten and Pre-K (ages 4-5, birth years 2015-2016) children, and serves as the fundamental age where the objective is to learn all elementary movement skills by building overall motor skills.

Nippers meet once per week on Saturdays at the Sampson G. Smith School. The sessions will be conducted in the open space in the back area.

Nippers Parents Information:

1.      First day is September 19, 2020.

2.      Sessions are from 9AM to 10AM at Middlebush Park (421 Demott Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873) every Saturday for 8 weeks.
Please arrive at the field 15 minutes prior to start to allow for necessary temperature checks.

3.      Required for the program:

a.      Soccer Cleats

b.      Shin Guards/Pads (Needs to be covered by either soccer socks or sweatpants to avoid injuries)

c.      Size 3 Soccer Ball

d.      Water Bottles (It's thirsty work running around and having fun)

e.      Comfortable athletic wear (t-shirts will be distributed at the first practice)

Components of the Game for the U-6 Age Group

Note: the components listed below are in order for the age group

1.     Fitness

1.1. Introduce the idea of how to warm-up and movement education.

1.2. Balance, walking, running, how to start and stop, jumping, hopping, rolling, skipping, changing direction, bending, twisting and reaching.

2.     Technique

2.1. Dribbling (stop and start)

2.2. Shooting

3.     Psychology

3.1. Sharing, fair play, parental involvement, “how to play” and emotional management

4.     Tactics

4.1. Where is the field?

4.2. Concept of boundary lines

4.3. At which goal to shoot

4.4. Playing with the ball wherever it may go


Typical U-6 Training Session

•   Should not exceed 45 minutes

•   Every child should have a ball

•   First Phase (approx. 15 minutes)

•   Free play or a warm-up, including movement education challenges and soccernastics (Fun activities with or without the ball which challenges coordination, balance, flexibility, ball skill and creativity)

•   Second Phase (approx. 15 minutes)

•   Game-like activities, mostly body awareness and maze games

•   Third Phase (approx. 15 minutes)

•   Finish with a 3v3 games with 2 goals, no goalkeepers

•   Best time to teach rules of the games

•   Fun games involving small numbers can be played, especially 1v1, 2v1, 1v2 and 2v2 leading up to a final activity of 3v3
